Kelly is my aunt, Mom's younger sister. I spent a ton of time at my grandparent's house and my earliest memories are of being there. The clearest of those memories are when Kelly came home. The first ones must've been home from college, then it was bringing my very own Uncle Sam. It was always exciting. She brought youthful energy, giggling and a well-timed eye roll to an already happy home.
Twice a year, like clockwork, her and Sam would arrive in Glendive. They were up for anything and had the sweetest dog to play with, Sandy. When things got tense, they'd call themselves something close to "darling." Later, they'd explain that in Lao, it means some thing less than a term of endearment.
Eventually, they would bring the sweetest babies. Chris, then "Chris and Derek." Finally, Jamie was the munchkin keeping our holidays full of toys and our summers in kiddie pools.
Kelly always signified something good was happening-picnics in Makoshika, fireworks on the patio, giggly hugs and huge dinners spoiled by lefse and popcorn balls.
We'd miss her most of the year. We miss her right now.
We always will.
