Richard (Dick) Allen was born in Pontiac, Michigan, on October 16, 1931, to Harold and Clara Allen. He was raised in Clarkston, Michigan, and went on to receive his undergraduate degree, master’s degree, and doctorate from Michigan State University.
While attending Michigan State, Dick met his future wife, Jean, who became the love of his life and greatest supporter. They shared 65 wonderful years of marriage together.
After moving to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Dick began teaching speech and communication at Central Michigan University, where he was affectionately known by many as “Doc.” Being a professor, mentor, and advisor to students were the highlights of his career. He also became the live sports announcer for CMU football, basketball, and baseball games, and was known for many years as “The Voice of the Marching Chips.”
Though Mt. Pleasant was the place he considered home, Dick moved to North Texas in 2019. He was blessed to reach his 94th birthday just before his passing on October 28, 2025.
He is survived by his sons, Steve Allen (wife, Lisa) of Berkley, Michigan, and Scott Allen (wife, Debbie) of North Richland Hills, Texas; grandchildren Lindsay Allen, Amanda Barker (husband, Wes), Nicole Covarelli (husband, Jordan), Justin Allen (wife, Katie), and Audriana Allen; and great-grandchildren Cas Covarelli, Asher Covarelli, and Robin Allen.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Clara Allen; his brother, Robert Allen; and his beloved wife, Jean Allen.
A memorial service is being planned for the spring of 2026 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.
