Shelley Anne Potts Taylor, 56, went home to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 27, 2026, after a courageous battle against breast cancer. She passed peacefully at home, surrounded by her loved ones, with her faith fully intact, allowing her the expectant joy of being with the Lord.
Shelley married the love of her life, John Taylor, on September 24, 1995, after meeting at a Jimmy Buffett concert in Dallas, Texas. In choosing that date, they honored her beloved "Nanny" (Nell) and "Pop" (Edward) Thomas, as it was their 50th wedding anniversary. JT and Shelley continued the family legacy of long, loving marriages, sharing just shy of 31 years together. They raised their children, Emily Reese (Caleb) Little and Jack Evan Taylor, in Haslet, Texas, after a short time living in Gilbert, Arizona.
Shelley is survived by her loving parents, Jim and Ann Potts of Addison, Texas; her brother, Alan (Monika) Potts of Farmers Branch, Texas; her daughter, Emily Reese (Caleb) Little; and her son, Jack Evan Taylor. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins, including many who still reside in Birmingham, Alabama, where Shelley was born.
Shelley had been joyfully preparing to become "Nana" after recently learning that a grandson would be joining the family in December. As always, Shelley will remain a cherished part of his life from her new home in Heaven. Those fortunate enough to be part of Shelley's family knew without question that she always had their back. Her love for her family knew no bounds, and she was truly the heart of it.
Shelley's love for her family was only surpassed by her love for God. Easter Sunday in 2018 marked the day she fully surrendered her life to Christ. As her faith deepened, so did her joy and confidence in the promise of eternity. Her assurance of Heaven replaced any fear of cancer with peace and contentment, knowing she would one day be with the Lord. Her strength, grace, and unwavering testimony throughout her illness became the ministry God had prepared for her.
Shelley's ministry extended beyond people. She was an avid dog lover who fostered more than 100 rescue dogs, helping each one find a loving forever home. She had a special place in her heart for the most neglected and abused animals, showering them with love and compassion that was returned in countless kisses and unwavering trust.
Shelley possessed a remarkable gift for making people feel seen, heard, and loved. Through her career, Bible study, book club, church family, neighborhood, school friendships, mom groups, and everyday encounters, she built lifelong relationships. She greeted everyone with her signature smile and warm spirit and faithfully nurtured each friendship throughout her life.
Some of Shelley's dearest friendships and favorite memories were made during her 35-year career as a flight attendant with Southwest Airlines. Her career fueled her adventurous spirit and passion for travel, allowing her to experience more of the world than most people ever will. Among her favorite destinations were Denmark and Norway, where the honorary Taylor children, Ida and Sebastian, live. They became cherished members of the family after spending the 2018 school year as foreign exchange students with Emily and Jack.
Shelley made her home far more than a beautiful place to live—it was a place where everyone was welcome. Whether stopping by for a short visit or staying for an extended time, guests were welcomed with family, food, laughter, and unconditional hospitality. As Emily and Jack were growing up, "Casa de Tay" became the neighborhood gathering place where friends always felt at home. Her warmth and generosity left a lasting impression on countless families and especially the young people who continue to love her.
Music held a special place in Shelley's heart. She loved classic rock, country, worship, and praise music, but she was especially fond of Jimmy Buffett. Together with her best friend and fellow Parrot Head, JT, she attended at least twelve Jimmy Buffett concerts in multiple states. Still, her favorite artist was always her daughter, Emily. Nothing brought Shelley greater joy than hearing Emily sing, especially "Goodness of God."
Shelley was truly larger than life. Those blessed to know and love her will remember her quick wit, gentle sarcasm, generous heart, and servant's spirit. Her beauty, radiant smile, Southern charm, and unmistakable accent brightened every room she entered. She had the rare ability to make everyone feel valued, and a hug from Shelley was good for the soul. Her impact reached far beyond what she ever realized, and her loving spirit will never be forgotten. Though our hearts are broken by her absence, we rejoice in knowing she is with her Savior, and we look forward to the day we are reunited with her.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Milestone Church, 201 Mount Gilead Road, Keller, Texas 76248. A reception will immediately follow the service, where family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate Shelley's extraordinary life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Shelley's honor to Salvaged Souls Pet Rescue or to the dog rescue organization of your choice.
