I am heartbroken to learn of Alex’s passing. He touched my life in a profound way. We met at a Tomson Highway lecture and bonded over our shared passion for Indigenous rights and social justice. I will always remember his incredible stories about his childhood years growing up in Uranium City, and how he learned to respect the environment through the traditional Cree teachings his parents raised him with. And after a severe workplace accident forced him to pursue other paths, he overcame dyslexia to learn to read and write as an adult, enabling him to attend college, and then university to pursue his goals.

Alex had the best sense of humour, and his smile and unmistakable laughter filled a room when you were in it. He was had the most generous heart imaginable; and he would feed the homeless, even during times when he struggled to make ends meet. He afforded everyone dignity, no matter what their social status was. Alex was instrumental in starting Kelowna’s first MMIW March. And he was the most dedicated father to his children, whom he loved more than anything. He taught me so much about life and Indigenous ways of knowing; He had many gifts and talents, and I will hold his teachings in my heart forever. Rest in Peace, dear Alex.
