Barbara Joan Nicholson May 13, 1929 – May 6, 2021

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mom and grandmother, Barbara Joan Nicholson, who died peacefully on Thursday, May 6 with her family by her side. Barb will be remembered for her warmth, generous spirit, love of family, her infectious laugh and wonderful sense of humour. Barb was born in Kimberley, B.C. and graduated from high school in Nelson before going on to nursing school in Victoria, B.C. She practiced in Penticton, California, and at Shaughnessy Hospital in Vancouver where she met her husband, Jack. They were married in Kelowna before moving to Powell River and then onto Terrace, B.C. In Terrace, Barb and Jack became fixtures in the town, with Barb putting her creative and organizational skills to good use in the hospital auxiliary, hosting costume balls and dances. They raised their three kids Janice, Debbie and Gregg there, until the family moved to Kelowna in 1974. Barb and Jack’s many years in Kelowna will be remembered as a time spent making lifelong friends. They shared laughs over dinners and hosted numerous guests, at their home and at the family cabin on Okanagan Lake. Barb was the ultimate host and the matriarch of the beach. A great conversationalist, she always made everyone feel welcome. She was a great sport who always enjoyed a good water fight, feeding the Wilson Landing gang of kids, and always showed her appreciation (often with a delicious lemon pie!) and a well said Barb-ism. The many family get-togethers were always filled with funny stories, good food, a lot of laughter, and “just a smidgen” of wine! Barb is survived by her children Jan, Deb (Mike) and Gregg (Michelle), her grandchildren Kim (Alex), Kevin, Rebecca (Nick), Jenna (Wyatt), and Brianna (John), and her great-granddaughter Rowynn. Barb was predeceased by her husband Jack in 2008, and her son-in-law Blair in April 2021. The family would like to thank Dr. Dan Obedkoff for his kindness and compassion over the many years, and the wonderful palliative staff on 4 East at KGH. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Barb’s name be made to the KGH Foundation Palliative Care Fund. (kghfoundation.com). A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
