Char passed away on January 16, 2021 in Kelowna, B.C. She is survived by her husband Glen Deacoff; sons Jeff Deacoff (wife Paddy) and Scott Deacoff (wife Judy); brother Harry Winkles (wife Frieda), brother-in-law Robert Deacoff (wife Brenda); granddaughter Candice Deacoff (husband Andrew); and long-time friend Ellen Ward.
Char was born on June 9, 1935 in Vernon and grew up in Armstrong, Rossland, and then in Chilliwack, where she worked in her father’s shoe store. After graduating from high school, she was employed in the library at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering (RCSME). There she met and married her husband, Glen, and went with him to Europe, where she travelled extensively and worked with the Canadian Forces Radio Service.
On returning to Canada, their first son Jeff was born in Ontario, and their second son Scott was born later in B.C. The family returned to the Okanagan, where Char was very involved in the community, serving at one point as the chairperson of the Ellison Parks Board, and was engaged in extensive studies of several languages.
Char had a keen interest in fashion and cosmetics, and headed the cosmetics counter at Hudson’s Bay at Orchard Park before branching off into her own artistry, cosmetics, and health business. Never one to shy away from hard work or to consider slowing down, Char also long supported the day to day operations of her son’s family business. Her many talents and supportive nature will be dearly missed.
The Deacoff family extends their thanks to the Interior Health and Kelowna Hospice House staff for their compassion in caring for Char. A memorial is expected to be held in the spring. To share fond memories and condolences, you can visit www.valleyviewfuneralhome.com.
