At the age of 97, on July 25th, Donna passed peacefully. Born in Hollywood California, Donna grew up in Abbotsford, BC. She proudly called herself a Fraser Valley girl. She was the youngest daughter of Claude and Margaret Weir. Hoping for a boy, she was nicknamed Jimmy and was her dad’s fishing partner and helper at the family gas station. She was predeceased by oldest sister Jean Roblin and survived by sister Margaret Young.
As a young person, Donna travelled around Europe on a moped with her Abbotsford girlfriends. Following that she returned to the UK where she met Bill(Steve), got married in Glasgow and brought him back to Canada. She always called him her ‘souvenir from abroad”.
Donna and Steve had a wonderful life together. Moving from North Vancouver to Victoria and lastly Kelowna where they lived for 50 plus years. They had an active social life. Steve loved his cricket and they both enjoyed golf. After 45 years of marriage Steve passed away in 2002.
Donna’s work life included early days at the Dominion Building in Vancouver to employment as a secretary in the SFU office in Kelowna. She was an excellent seamstress and gardener. She loved to cook and entertain and lately enjoyed mahjong. She was a lifelong learner and after retirement enjoyed courses through “Seniors Learning in Retirement”. Donna travelled widely enjoying trips from Prague to Haida Gwai, Newfoundland and Mexico.
Fondly remembered by nieces and nephews, Donna created a binder of her life’s experiences which is a treasured reminder of the interesting life she led. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. With no family close by, Chris Cowan and Naomi Pennington were special friends to Donna who visited often up until her passing.
Many thanks to the excellent staff of Glenmore Lodge where Donna was lovingly cared for over the past 16 months.
A gathering of friends and family will be planned in the near future.
