Dorothy was our miracle mom. In the 1980s, she defied the odds by surviving a rare blood disease, and her resilience continued to inspire us throughout her life. She brought joy to everyone who knew her, always offering a kind word and her trademark cheerful personality. Many lovingly called her a sweetheart.
Born in Toronto on July 20, 1930, to Winifred (née Slade) and John Hudson, Dorothy worked at CBC Radio, where she was known for her proficiency in Pitman shorthand. She was deeply involved with the Canadian Girls in Training (C.G.I.T.) through the United Church, mentoring many young girls as a devoted leader.
In 1952, she married Harvey Eller and together they built a life full of adventure, living in Norwich, Brantford, North York, and even spending time in Lahr, West Germany between 1973 and 1975. Eventually, they made their home in the beautiful Okanogan, settling in Vernon, BC.
Dorothy was a dedicated stay-at-home mom, though she also worked as a teacher’s aid and used her secretarial skills typing church newsletters. She shared her talents generously, teaching knitting to Grade 3 students in Vernon for many years.
Her passions were many: sewing, quilting, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, playing bridge, reading, scrapbooking, letter writing, dancing and collecting rocks. In recent years, weekly FaceTime calls with her children and grandchildren in Kelowna, Toronto and Winnipeg brought her great joy.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Harvey Eller (2023), her brother-in law, Bob Hardock and nephew, Gary Hardock. She is survived by her children, Ken Eller, (Cheryl Giraudy), Nancy Eller and Sandra Peters; her cherished grandchildren Aaron, Scott and Amelia and her brother John Hudson (Dorothy), as well as a sister-in-law, niece and several nephews.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at The Hamlets at Vernon, Polson Extended Care Unit, Good Samaritan Heron Grove, and most recently at Lakeview Lodge in West Kelowna.
In lieu of flowers, donation in Dorothy’s memory may be made to charity of your choice.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her warmth, spirit, and unwavering love.
