Ernst was born and raised in Althofen, Austria. He apprenticed as an electrician there, and first came to work in Canada at the age of 19. Only after returning to Austria did he make the decision to settle permanently in Canada, but he always cherished his hometown and homeland and regularly visited friends and family there. For the majority of his working career, he was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, becoming known as one of the best in his field, and winning multiple awards. He was very sporty, loved classical music, and enjoyed a long and happy retirement. He was frequently to be seen walking to, around, and from Kelowna's Waterfront Park until his health began to decline a few years ago.
A funeral service will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, 839 Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna, on Tuesday, April 7th at 1:00pm. Afterwards, a reception will be held at the Cathedral Church of St. Michael & All Angels, just down the street at 608 Sutherland Ave. His ashes will later be scattered privately.
In lieu of flowers, donations to support research and care at BC Cancer, Sindi Ahluwalia Hawkins Centre, Kelowna would be appreciated.
