

June 21, 1930 – January 25, 2020
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gilbert Louis Nagy at the age of 89. Dad went peacefully in his sleep on January 25, 2020. Gilbert is survived by Florence his loving wife of 66 years, his children: Gerard (Marilynne), Lawrence (Heather), Raymond (Virginia), Robert (Fran), Dianne (Greg) Stewart, Brenda (Gerald) Watson and Glen (Yvonne). Grandchildren: Angela, Daniel, Katherine, Erin, Nathaniel, Christopher, Cassandra, Jody, Thomas, James, Shayla, Briana, Kyler and Rylan and Gilbert’s sister Maryanne. Gilbert is predeceased by his son David. He is also predeceased by his parents Joseph and Anne as well as his brother Ernest, Joseph and Louis. Gilbert was born in a farm house in Yarbo, Saskatchewan. As a young man he enjoyed a variety of sports excelling in Hockey, Baseball and Basketball. He also attended St. Paul Collegiate, Winnipeg, Manitoba, excelling in his favorite sports of Boxing and Ping Pong. Gilbert worked on the family farm and also worked with other families clearing their land. This is where he met his beautiful bride Florence. After they married on October 26, 1954 they settled on their own farm, where they started their family of 8 children. After selling the farm in 1972 they packed up all 8 children to make the journey to Kelowna, BC. He began his new career as an Automotive Machinist. Once in Kelowna they continued their hard work ethics and worked in orchards. He was very proud that in one season the family picked 10 railway cars of apples to purchase a ski boat that was used immensely. Gilbert’s mind never stopped, he was always thinking and tinkering about different ideas. He had several patents pending and was awarded a Patent for a mechanical toy. He was instrumental in helping to expand Florence’s knowledge of cooking which turned into Nagy Catering, which was also a family event. It wasn’t all just work, there were also a lot of fun times. Family skiing at Last Mountain and Big White, family swimming at the recreation centre. He was very proud of all his children in sports and any activity they wished to pursue. When Gilbert and Florence hung up their ski’s, they thoroughly enjoyed going to all the Senior’s dances in Kelowna. Their favorite dance was “The Old Time Waltz”. Gilbert was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 59 years. He was an active member of the Church as he enjoyed singing solo and in the choir as well as being a Reader and Eucharistic Minister. Gilbert and Florence enjoyed taking trips. They cherished the visits they had with family and friends they knew and also seeking out long lost relatives that they had never met before along the way all across Canada and into the United States. Prayers will be recited on Monday, February 3, 2020 at 7:00 PM at the Immaculate Conception Church, 839 Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna, BC. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at 10:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will be at Lakeview Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
