Helen Grant, a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2025, at the age of 93. She was lovingly cared for by her sons in her final years, who remained by her side until the end.
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Robert and Dorothy MacLean, Helen was the youngest of four children, growing up in St. James, attending Linwood School. Helen was known as “Mac” and was an accomplished athlete who played basketball, and a talented writer.
In the early 50’s, she moved to Victoria, where she met Jack Grant. They married and built a life together, raising their family in the Lower Mainland before settling in Kelowna in 1964.
Helen’s career was marked by dedication and service. She worked at the courthouse in administration before spending years at Kelowna General Hospital in purchasing and laundry. She also contributed her time during elections. Following her retirement, Helen dedicated herself to the things she loved most, her family, her community, and her many passions.
Helen was an unwavering supporter of her children and granddaughters. She spent countless hours scorekeeping at sporting events, cheering from the sidelines, and ensuring they always felt encouraged and loved. A strong and independent woman, she never let an opportunity for connection pass her by.
A talented cook, she was known for hosting Sunday dinners, where she brought family and friends together over delicious meals and her famous pies. She loved bowling, soaking up the sun in Mexico, and her favorite pastime was playing crib and bridge with friends, where her competitive spirit shone. Helen never turned down a game, especially when she knew she would win.
Helen was deeply committed to her community, volunteering for the Kelowna crisis line to provide comfort and support to those in need. Her kindness, warmth, and generous spirit left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Helen leaves behind her sons Stewart (Dominque), Gary, and Kelly (previous spouse Colleen), as well as her granddaughters, Gita, Stefanie, Jasmine, Nicole, and Danielle, and great-grandchildren: Raven, Jamuna, Blake, Kenzie, Sterling, Evander, Urijah, and Satori. She was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Karen, husband Jack, and her siblings, Neil, Gordon, and Eleanor.
Helen’s family would like to thank Kelly North and the caregivers at David Lloyd Jones for their care and compassion over the years.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 21, at First Memorial Funeral Services, 1211 Sutherland Ave, Kelowna, BC. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be available via Livestream at the following link:
