June 4, 1931 – March 3, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph Raskob of Kelowna, BC, on March 3, 2025, at the age of 93. A devoted husband of 67 years and proud father of four, Joe will be best remembered by those who knew him for his dedication to family, unwavering principles, and his quick sense of humor.
Joe was born in St. Gregor, SK, on June 4, 1931, one of 11 children. He left school at the age of 15 to work for his father’s business, where he honed the skills that would eventually earn him the reputation as a jack of all trades. In 1954, fate sent him west with the promise of work to Sinclair Mills, BC, where he met the love of his life, Ellen. They married in 1957 and moved to Prince George, BC, where they started their family. Joe bought into Prince George Taxi as an owner-operator, and over the years “Car 17” became a mainstay around town, his kids always knowing if they had been seen doing something they shouldn’t have. He was a consummate gentleman in every sense of the word, well-known for his respectful demeanor and iron handshake, and was a role model his sons and grandsons aspired to.
When Joe retired, he and Ellen travelled the United States yearly in their motorhome, often wintering in Florida with family. He had a lifelong enthusiasm for sports, maintaining his passion for golf even after a stroke befell him, and was an avid card player who especially enjoyed games of crazy rummy and cribbage. Joe could also often be found with a Louis L’Amour or Zane Grey book in his hand.
In later years he battled – and overcame – numerous medical conditions, though it never dampened his spirit. He looked forward to having those same novels dictated to him by his daughter Sheryl, his evening cocktail, and of course his daily visits with Ellen. He cherished spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will remember him as a kind, deeply conscientious man with a warm laugh, who would do anything for his family.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Ellen, his children Peter (Linda), Sheryl (Al), Charlene (Dave), Keven, 13 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents Peter and Anna, his sisters Mary, Sally, Helen, Irene, Bernadine, and Isabel, and his brothers Eddie, Clarence, Gerald, and Cyril.
