Joyce was born in Portsmouth, England to Pelham William Evans and Elsie Clara Evans, now deceased. She was predeceased by her loving sister, Pamela Pape (Leonard). She served in the British Royal Navy WRNs, Commander in Chief’s Office, Portsmouth, Fort Wallington, Fort Southwick and Naval Party 1764 Brussels Naval Signal Center as a P.O. Wren from 1939 to 1945. She met and married her husband, William (Bill) Gibson Hardcastle, in 1942. Their darling daughter Jill Elizabeth came along in 1946, followed by son Pelham William in 1948. Bill predeceased Joyce in 1995.
Joyce emigrated to Canada with her husband and children in 1956, crossing the ocean on the Ryndham. They landed at Halifax and made their trip across Canada to Edmonton via train. At various times they lived in Edmonton, White Rock, Salmon Arm and St. Albert, eventually settling in Kelowna. They became Canadian citizens in 1957.
Joyce is survived by her two children, Jill and Pelham (Rhonda) Hardcastle, grandchildren Shilo (Kevin) Bagshaw, Leif Hardcastle, Shawn Lambert, Lindsey Hardcastle, Dagen (Katie) Hardcastle, Britt (Nathan) Meichel and Rhey Estes; niece Susan Pape and nephews Trevor and Kenneth Pape, nephew Peter Hardcastle and great nephews Peter and Max Hardcastle. She was predeceased by her grandson Stephen Hardcastle on August 20, 2016. She is also survived by great grandchildren Candace (Chad Clark) Anderson, Christine (Adam Hjermstad) and Eric Anderson, Tyson, Alivea and Abby Lambert, Aaliyah Hardcastle, Miley Lambert, Jonas Meichel, Kaden and Izabellah Hardcastle, great grandniece Michaela (Darren) Hawkins (Pape) as well as great-great grandchildren Emmet, Addison and Sophia Anderson.
Joyce was a staunch member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 26, the Naval Vets Association and the Sisters of the Eastern Star. Prior to her retirement she worked for the Okanagan College. In retirement, Joyce served in various executive capacities on the Strata Council for her condominium. She loved animals and was a life-long supporter of the SPCA.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation and gratitude to John Andrews for his enduring friendship and care over the years and to the staff at David Lloyd Jones for the exemplary compassionate care provided in the last few months of Joyce’s life.
Joyce has been predeceased by many, many friends, yet many remain. A memorial service will be held at First Memorial, 1211 Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna on Friday, August 19, 2022 at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC SPCA are appreciated.
