Peggy was predeceased by her husband Derek and her parents Florence and Duncan Eyles, and sister Barbara. Peggy will be forever in the hearts of her daughters Jennifer (Rick), Diane (Kevin), Pauline and Barbara, also grandsons Christopher, Derek, Jordon, Joel and 5 great grandchildren.
Peggy was from a pioneering family that came to Oyama over 100 years ago. She attended Oyama Elementary as did all her children. Peggy was the 1st baby christened in Oyama’s St. Mary’s Anglican Church and was married there in 1950.
Peggy and Derek took over the family orchard from Peggy’s parents. She worked hard her whole life – raising four children, helping in the 20-acre orchard, managing a huge vegetable garden and always growing wonderful flowers.
Peggy was multi-talented at canning, jamming, freezing, and drying the fruit and vegetables on the property. In later years, she started all of her bedding plants in her greenhouse - keeping seeds, taking cuttings, Peggy had the greenest thumb you could ever imagine – imprinting on all of her daughters a life-long passion for gardening.
In addition to knitting and crocheting, Mom sewed everything from Barbie outfits to grad dresses. Peggy also did all the repair and décor improvements in the home. Peggy loved nature and was fascinated by all wildlife - especially birds. She had a special relationship with grand-dog Calli.
Peggy was born in Vernon and lived most of her life in Oyama. She and Derek moved to the Chatsworth in Kelowna in 2007, just 15 months before Derek’s death. She continued to live independently at the Chatsworth for another 14 years, of course with her own lovely flower garden.
In the last decade, daughters Pauline and Barbara returned to the Okanagan. Peggy enjoyed day trips, lunches, shopping and little adventures with her daughters. Peggy loved reading, puzzles and word games.
From very modest beginnings, Peggy travelled the world with her husband Derek and then her daughters. Peggy’s last international trip was to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico at age 89.
Peggy had a long marriage and a strong sense of family. She had a special relationship with each of her daughters. Everyone came back to Lake Country to celebrate holidays, special occasions and reunions – with Peggy the Eyles matriarch.
This spring, Peggy had several health issues and after several stays at KGH, our Mom returned to Lake Country for her last weeks of life. She died at Lake Country Lodge, where her mother had lived, and died, 37 years before. This was a full circle for Mom.
Our Mother showed us love, strength and determination until her last breath. Peggy was lovingly surrounded by her daughters 24/7 for her last 3 weeks of life - easing her final journey. We feel her absence greatly now.
A private family gathering is planned for September 2021 to celebrate Mom’s life.
Mom honored veterans’ charities and was a supporter of local foodbanks in addition to her passion for animals. If you would like to remember Peggy, please consider donating to the World Wildlife Fund.
