It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Margaret on April 6, 2024 following a lengthy illness. Born in Kelowna, BC, Margaret was an incredibly bright and vibrant woman who made a lasting impression upon everyone she met. Following her graduation from Kelowna High School in 1964, Margaret pursued her Bachelors Degree in Education at UBC. With her degree in hand, Margaret embarked upon an astonishing trip of a lifetime and spent 13 months travelling in Europe, Asia and Australia. Upon her return to Canada, Margaret became a French teacher at KHS, but in the mid 1970's the travel bug bit again and she was off to South America for several months. She later sought her credentials to become a Realtor. To pursue her new career she moved to New Westminster and where she met her husband Michael. In time, they moved to California and after several years relocated to Kelowna in 1989. Margaret returned to teaching and taught French and English at Rutland Senior High School.
Margaret was intensely loving and loyal and it showed in her relationships with family and friends. Family was incredibly important and she made great efforts to keep in touch with her nieces and nephews (as well as the next generation). She loved planning various "adventures" and gatherings for both family and friends. Her sense of style, energy and smile lit her path and could fill a room. Along with her passion for gardening, Margaret and had an amazing eye for decorating and creating welcoming spaces. Her home was her oasis and she enjoyed sharing it with those she loved.
Margaret leaves behind a wealth of cherished memories and hearts filled with love and gratitude. She will be forever remembered by her loving husband of nearly 40 years, Michael Trethewey; her sister Jean Treadgold (brother-in-law Miles); her nieces and nephew and a close circle of dear friends. Margaret was pre-deceased by her parents Peter and Nina Ritchie as well as her brother Evan Ritchie and sister-in-law Sharon Ritchie.
At Margaret's request, there will not be a formal service, but a Celebration of Life will be held in the summer. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Kelowna General Hospital.
