Marjorie (Marj) Kathleen Showler nee Barber passed away peacefully Sunday morning, August 4, 2024. She is survived by her son Denis Showler (Jacki Morgan), daughters Doreen Showler and Susan Shipley, and her two sisters Jean Elliot and Anne Barber.
Marj has two grandchildren Aimee-Lee (Quintin) Laing and Christopher Showler and has two great grandsons Hunter and Hayden Laing. She has four step-grandchildren, Leanne (Scott) Richmond, Kirk Morgan, Sara and Stefanie Shipley and their son and five daughters. Marj also has five nieces and nephews and their families. Family friend Susan Johal was very dear to Marj.
Marj was born on Rose Avenue in Kelowna and her family moved to Rutland in 1939. She did not leave Rutland until January of this year, when she joined her sister Jean at The Lake Country Lodge.
Marj graduated from Rutland High School in 1947 and then attended the Herbert's Business School. She worked for the BMID as a steno bookkeeper ($75.00 monthly) and she also worked at Boyd's Drive In Theatre in 1950, where she met her husband Birt Showler.
She sold real estate and was on the School Board for 12 years. Marj and Birt were active in The Rutland Park Society, The Volunteer Fire Department and Rutland May Days, as well as many other Rutland organizations. Marj and Birt loved fishing and playing card with their friends, the Hartmans and the Morphys. She loved being with her family and friends and thought she lived in the best place in the world. You could often find Marj in her garden, tending to her flowers and vegetables. Marj always had a way of making everyone feel welcomed and like they were family.
Special thanks to the staff at Lake Country Lodge for the wonderful way they treated mom and all of our family. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or any charity of your choice.
