Born in the rural village of Porumbenii Mari, Transylvania, on January 10, 1944, Mike was the eldest of seven siblings. Raised in a small Hungarian-speaking community where horse-drawn carts still roam the streets, Mike developed a deep love for horses, folk songs, and poetry. He left home at a young age and pursued a lifelong career as a skilled carpenter.
At age 40, Mike started a family of his own but, as political unrest grew in Romania, Mike fled to Egypt, seeking freedom from communism. It was there that his Christian faith deepened, and he was baptized. During those years in Egypt, he also began to learn English. Mike eventually reunited with his family when he brought them to Canada—first to Toronto in 1990, and later settled in Kelowna, BC, in 2003.
Mike had an adventurous spirit and a love for the outdoors. He was known for singing on long car rides, always with a tune from his homeland. He found joy in fishing, especially in the peaceful mountain lakes, and was endlessly curious about global politics, Christian theology, and history. Mike spent his time solving word searches, reading, nurturing houseplants, and indulging in one of his favorite pastimes—thrift shopping.
In his later years, Mike was often described as gentle, kind, and quiet. He was a devoted grandfather, showing his love in the most thoughtful ways—games of catch in the living room, and gifts like cozy slippers and chocolates.
Mike is survived by his son, Zsolt (Alison) Ketesdi, and granddaughters: Amelia and Vienna. At Mike’s request, no formal service will be held. The Ketesdi family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to all those who provided care and compassion during Mike’s final chapter, including Interior Health Home and Community Care, Mission Creek Landing, Kelowna General Hospital, BC Cancer Clinic, Connect Hearing, and Urologist Dr. Jennifer Locke.
We will see you in Heaven Dad, until we meet again. We love you.
