Predeceased by his wife Jewel Fay. Survived by his sons Bob (Jeanne), Kelowna, BC and Jim (Linda), Alma, NB; 5 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and his sister Margaret (Sister Celima), Toronto, ON. Uncle Paul will also be missed by his many nieces and nephews across Canada from Toronto to Prince Rupert.
Paul was a great storyteller and loved to relate the stories of his youth in Toronto and his many exploits in the military. In 1947, at the age of 17 he joined the army and was sent for training to CFB Chilliwack. There he met the love of his life, Jewel Johnson, at the Cultus Lake Roller Rink. His military career took him and his family to many places such as Chilliwack, Alert, Wainwright, the Alaska Highway, Germany (x2) until finally retiring in 1974 from CFB Baldy Hughes.
Paul and Jewel had many adventures during their 68 years of marriage creating lifelong memories and friendships. Together they golfed, camped, fished, and travelled, spending many winters in California, Florida and Mexico. They especially loved spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Paul’s military career prepared him to be the “MacGyver” for new friends in retirement. He is fondly remembered by neighbors in Salmon Arm, at LaVista in Summerland and at Lakeshore Place in Kelowna where a common refrain was “ask Paul!”. At La Vista he was so well regarded that the Good Neighbor Award was created for him.
Paul passed away peacefully at the Kelowna General Hospital. The family want to thank Dr. Huang, Dr. Mohr and the nursing staff on 4B for their dedicated care, as well as the staff of Lakeshore Place where he was warmly regarded during his final year. Typical of Paul he did not want any fuss at his passing. As a proud veteran he asked only that those he leaves behind raise a glass to his memory in a final salute.
