It is with both heavy and loving hearts we announce the passing of Tony Mulders on October 13, 2024. Born in Holland, Tony’s life journey began with and unforgettable twist- he came to Canada on a dare from a friend, $50 in his pocket and a world of opportunity ahead of him. What followed was nothing short of remarkable.
Tony’s Canadian adventure started in Saskatchewan, but it was the Okanagan that stole his heart after a few summers here. Deciding to move the family, he brought his expertise and infectious joy to the community, quickly earning the nickname “Tony the Happy Plumber”. It was a name that stuck not just because he fixed leaks with a grin, but because his spirit was as warm and welcoming as a glass of his famous homemade wine.
A master at more than just plumbing, Tony could often be found donning his white captain’s hat at the helm of his boat during the summer. Proudly displayed on the dash was his trusty sign that read; “I’m the captain of this ship.. My wife said I could be.” He spent countless hours teaching friends and family to waterski. Winters, however, were another matter. He would brave one or two ski runs, but the real destination was the pot of soup in the chalet.
Tony believed, life was meant to be lived with great friends, great stories and great wine.
He was a devoted husband to Anne (Chien) for an incredible 66 years. Together, they raised three wonderful daughters: Evelyn (partner Pat and her son Cory), Jacqueline (husband Les, sons Tyrell and Rylan), and Monica, who passed away in 2012 but leaves behind her husband Steve, who remains an adored and cherished member of the family. We are blessed to have Anne’s brother Andre and wife Joann and all of their family, supporting us during this time.
Tony was the youngest and last survivor of nine siblings, his extensive family of nieces and nephews too numerous to mention still mostly reside in Holland.
Tony passed peacefully, leaving behind countless fond memories and a life well lived.
Though we must say goodbye to Tony, we know his legacy of laughter and love will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date, likely in the spring, when the captain’s hat can once again make its appearance on the water.
In the meantime raise a glass of red wine and toast to a man who lived with humour, joy, and an unyielding love for family and friends.
