James E. Marthia

September 2, 1951 – September 14, 2026

James Eugene Marthia, 75, passed away on September 14, 2026.

Born on September 2, 1951, James was the son of the late Florence Schwach and James Marthia. He grew up in the Amherst area and graduated from Sweet Home High School. James spent much of his working life with the Town of Amherst Recreation Department, where he worked as a foreman until his retirement.

James was the devoted father of Nicholas Marthia and Vanessa (Ryan) Rueger and the proud grandfather of Ethan Marthia, Rene Rueger, and Chloe Marthia. He is also survived by his sister, Kathy (Dale) Wohlfeil; his former wife, Tonia Caito, who remained an important part of his life and care; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Florence Schwach and James Marthia; his sister, Maryann Mueller; and his brother-in-law, William Mueller.

Those who knew James knew how much he valued staying active. Fitness was a major part of his life, and it wasn't unusual for him to work out twice a day. He loved football and was an especially devoted Buffalo Bills fan. He enjoyed traveling, trying new foods and restaurants throughout the Buffalo area, having a good beer, and settling in for a football game or an episode of Seinfeld. A true night owl, James was often happiest staying up late and enjoying life on his own schedule.

James divided his time between his homes in Amherst, New York, and New Smyrna Beach, Florida, where he especially enjoyed the sunshine and warm weather. He loved being outdoors and traveling, but some of his greatest companions throughout his life were his pets. James almost always had an animal by his side, particularly dogs, and had a deep kindness toward animals.

More than anything, James will be remembered for the way he treated people. He was kindhearted, accepting of others, generous with his time, and always willing to help someone who needed it. That generosity extended to his community through his volunteer work at a local food pantry.

James will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered St. Timothy RC Church , 565 E. Park Dr., Tonawanda , Saturday, September 26th at 9:45 am, followed by a celebration of James' life.
