Sister John Maron Abdella, one of the oldest nuns in the United States, died Saturday at the Sisters of St. Joseph Residence, Clarence. She was 109.
Born in Bohanas Mt. Lebanon, Syria, the former Evelyn Abdella came to Fredonia in 1910. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in September 1929 and pronounced her vows in August 1932.
She earned a bachelor of science in education degree from Mount St. Joseph Teachers College in 1939.
Her career in education brought her to primary grade classes in many schools in the diocese of Buffalo.
Prior to retirement, she spent 13 years as a remedial math and reading teacher at St. Margaret School in North Buffalo.
She had lived at the sisters’ residence since 1992, staying active in gardening and crocheting.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 10 a.m. Thursday in the Sisters of St. Joseph Residence, 4975 Strickler Road, Clarence.
