Avis attended Jonestown School before transferring to Senior School in Kingston. As the eldest sibling, she embraced significant responsibilities early in life, caring for her younger siblings, Olive and Gerald, while managing household duties. It was during this time she discovered her passion for sewing under the guidance of Ms. Brown, a local seamstress.
In her early twenties, Avis moved to England to pursue her dreams. There, she reconnected with Gladstone Williams, whom she had met through his brother in Jamaica. The couple married on January 20, 1962, surrounded by friends and family. Their union was blessed with three children: Charles, Carol, and Lorna.
In the winter of 1972, Avis and her daughters relocated to the Bronx, New York, where she began working as a nurse's aide. Later, she earned her certification in Home Health Care and dedicated over 25 years to serving others with compassion and skill. Beyond her professional life, Avis found joy in baking, cooking, sewing, and playing cards with friends during weekends. She also had a keen interest in exploring real estate opportunities; hence, her dream of owning her own home in New York soon became a reality.
Avis knew the importance of attending church and became a long-time member of Outreach Baptist Church in New York, where she delighted in sharing her culinary creations with church family her ginger tea recipe being a particular favorite.
After more than 30 years in New York, Avis moved to Kennesaw, Georgia, in 2006 to be closer to her family, especially her three grandsons: Cameron, Carson, and Cayden Charles. Avis loved cooking for her grandsons, creating traditional dishes such as her beloved sorrel, baking cakes, and always having fresh fruit ready for them whenever they visited. While in Georgia, she attended Three Taverns Church, cultivated friendships, and found peace in gardening and home renovations.
On January 5, 2025, Avis wholeheartedly surrendered her life to Christ and reassured loved ones and friends that she was at peace. Subsequently, on the morning of January 15, 2025, Avis Adassa Williams passed away surrounded by family. She is survived by her siblings, Olive and Gerald; her three children, Charles, Carol, and Lorna; her sons-in-law, Ralston and Fredrick; her four grandchildren, Charles Jr., Cameron, Carson, and Cayden; her two great-grandchildren, Alicia and Marcus, and a host of relatives, extended family, and friends.
Her life was a testament to resilience, devotion, and unwavering love for her family and community. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her, and may her legacy live on in the hearts of those she touched.
