Rev. Calvin led a life full of honor, integrity, compassion, and faith. Early in life, he served in the United States Army and met the love of his life, Lillian. Shortly after meeting her they married and spent the next fifty-eight wonderful years together before her passing in January of 2002. In 1943, he was drafted into the Army in WWII during which he was stationed in nine states and five European countries including Germany where he helped build bridges to win the war.
Growing up on his parent’s farm, his mother guided him towards his faith in God and love for poetry and music. While serving in the Army, he chose to build a life on this foundation of faith taught by his mother and as he and Lillian raised their children, they passed on the legacy of faith in God to them that has continued to their great-grandchildren’s generation.
After the war, he became a minister in the Church of God of Prophecy. During his 33-year pastoral ministry, he pastored 11 churches in three states before retiring to the state of Georgia. He desired to leave the churches he pastored better than how he found them, focusing on loving and serving the people entrusted to his spiritual care. Even during his retirement years—until the age of 90—he preached, sang songs and taught a Sunday School class, sharing Christ with everyone, everywhere without hesitation.
In life, he was a farmer, a soldier, a carpenter, a husband, a father, a pastor, a singer of songs, a gardener, a fisher of fish and of men, a prayer-warrior, a widower and a friend to many. His legacy: He was a faith-filled man of God who led his family and friends by example.
He is survived by his son, Kenneth Grubbs; daughter, Lavonne Chatham and son-in-law, Philip Chatham; brother, Leo Grubbs; grandchildren, Greg Chatham, Michelle Rose, Lauren Linares, and Meghan Brown; and great grandchildren, Laurel Chatham, Julianne Chatham, Joshua Rose, Matthew Rose, Allison Rose, Willow Linares, and Gwen Linares.
