Cleada Gwendolyn Norton Butts was born in Oklahoma City, OK in 1920. Her parents were Aura Jennings Norton and Sallie Music Norton. She grew up during the Depression, so she always knew the value of a dollar. She was always an excellent student and attended Oklahoma City University before she went to work at the “telephone company” as she called it. That short lived career came to a halt when she met Mitchell Butts on a blind date. He was a dashing army officer (and southern gentleman) during World War II and happened to be stationed in OK at the time. She had a real weakness for a man in uniform so Mitchell swept her off her feet and they married six months later.
After the war Cleada and Mitchell settled in Louisiana on a cotton plantation and began their life together. They had four children.....Sallie Ann, Rebecca Jane, Stephen Mitchell, and Gary Boisclair. Cleada loved life on the farm and embraced it with a passion, easily developing all the qualities of a true southern lady. During their married life Cleada and Mitchell lived in Louisiana, Texas, and finally Georgia.
Cleada was a homemaker in the truest sense of the word. She was an excellent seamstress and made clothes for herself and her children, she was an excellent cook and was known for being the perfect hostess. So many were blessed by her generosity and her love. Music always filled her home, primarily classical and Christian, but sometimes the big band music of the 1940s would be played, bringing back memories of younger years for Cleada and Mitchell. She loved antiques and pretty things and her home was filled with them.
Cleada was a woman of strong faith, grace, and character and never hesitated to talk about the Lord she loved. She attended many churches throughout her lifetime and found joy and friendships everywhere she planted her spiritual feet. Everyone loved Miss Cleada! When people asked Cleada the secret to her longevity, she always responded......”Eat your veggies, stay out of the sun, and love the Lord with all your heart.”
Cleada was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jack, her husband, Mitchell, and grandsons Kenneth Lee Levingston, and Ryan Mitchell Levingston. She is survived by her children, Sallie Nobles, Rebecca Sanders, Stephen Butts, and Gary Butts; grandchildren, Suzanne McGill, Jeffrey Nobles, Mary Hamilton, Paul Levingston, Nathan Butts, Stephanie Butts; seven great grandchildren, and eight great great grandchildren. She was known fondly to all the grands as Meemo.
