Daniel Reese Farnell, Sr. was born in the Pleasant Valley area of Mobile, Alabama in 1932 and lived over the years in Mississippi, Michigan, Alabama, and Georgia. He was the fourth of the six children of Ralph Farnell, Sr. and May Hunter Farnell.
Daniel was a graduate of Murphy High School and studied at Spring Hill College. He served in the Army National Guard and went on to earn his D.V.M. and M.S. degrees from Auburn University, and his PhD from Michigan State University. His positions include service as Chair of the Veterinary Sciences Department at Mississippi State University, Director of the Department of Comparative Medicine at the University of South Alabama, and research scientist at Southern Research Institute in Birmingham, Alabama.
As a young person Daniel developed a love for nature through time spent outdoors in the coastal landscape of Alabama. He showed early aptitudes for art and science, a keen aesthetic sense, and appreciation for the beauty of the Earth. His many talents and curiosity about the natural world culminated in his career as a research pathologist and his avocation as a gardener.
Daniel met Carolyn B. Williamson on a blind date in 1952. They were married for 64 years and had four children. He was a devoted husband, loving father, loyal friend, and dedicated Auburn fan.
Daniel is survived by his wife, Carolyn Williamson Farnell; three daughters, Andrea Farnell Nicholas (Stephen Nicholas), Cynthia C. Farnell (Dan Powell) both of Atlanta, GA, Evelyn Farnell Jackson (Dr. Colin Jackson), twin grandchildren Owen and William Jackson, all of Oxford, MS, and a sister, Judy Farnell McMichael of Mobile, AL. He was predeceased by his son, Daniel Reese Farnell, Jr.
A memorial service to celebrate Daniel’s life will be held on Saturday, March 9 at Wickenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home, 2950 North Cobb Pkwy NW, Kennesaw, GA 30152. Visiting hours begin at 1:30 p.m. and the service starts at 2:00 p.m. A reception with refreshments will follow the service.
