David Carey Butler

David Carey Butler, 79, of Kennesaw, Georgia, passed away on July 25, 2026. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Loraine and Cyril Butler, Dave began working at the young age of 12 in his father's drug store, Butler Bros. Drugs. He met the love of his life, Nancy, in a pool hall upon mistakenly grazing her white mohair sweater with a freshly chalked cue stick. He married her the same weekend he graduated from University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, and the pair struck out for a new life in Chicago where he worked in various corporate roles for several drug store chains, one of which sponsored him in obtaining a law degree.

His corporate career brought the family south to Marietta in 1979, and he and Nancy grew to love the town so deeply that he refused a mandatory transfer to Tampa and set out his shingle on the Marietta Square. He built a respected independent law practice and ran it for more than 30 years, with Nancy serving as his paralegal, office manager, and champion.

While Dave was known for his disciplined work ethic, what really drove him were his hobbies, especially woodworking. He could build anything from a sketch, from furniture to a three-tiered deck complete with built-in benches and planters. Later in life, he found joy being home with Nancy, working their gardens to produce tomatoes and blueberries that he nonetheless refused to eat - and the two were married for more than 50 years before she passed away in 2024.

Dave is survived by his daughters, Tracy Zoblisein of Acworth, along with her husband Patrick and their sons Andrew and David; Deborah Butler of Atlanta, along with her sons Samuel and Theodore; and boxes and boxes of handmade wooden toys for his grandsons to pass to their children. He was predeceased by his only brother and favorite friend, Richard Butler of Williamsburg, Virginia.

Following a private service, the family will receive friends to celebrate Dave's life on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Marietta Country Club on Stilesboro Road in Kennesaw. Donations may be made in his name to Must Ministries in Marietta.
