February 17, 1947 – June 22, 2025
It is with deep love and celebration of a life well-lived that we announce the passing of SMSgt David Thomas Nelson, Sr. born on February 17, 1947, to beloved Herman & Hilda Nelson in Greenville, NC. lived a full and fearless life marked by courage, laughter, loyalty, and love.
Dave proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, dedicating 20 years to the cause of freedom and retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant. A Vietnam War veteran and a proud member of the VFW, he received a medal for his extraordinary bravery in saving the life of a fellow serviceman. His valor and commitment to his brothers and sisters in arms will never be forgotten.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from KSU and applied that same intelligence and work ethic to everything he did, whether it was serving his country, raising a family, or mastering the art of professional gambling. Known to light up a room with his Hawaiian shirts and bigger-than-life spirit, Dave was as unique as they come. In his younger years, he found thrills in drag racing and cheering on his favorite NASCAR drivers. He loved the rush of pro football Sundays and the lights and sounds of a good casino.
Above all, Dave was a devoted father and grandfather, the kind who never missed a birthday, always showed up for the big (and small) moments, and brought joy each Christmas wearing his signature Santa hat. Like clockwork, he would make the rounds delivering envelopes to his loved ones, spreading cheer and love with each visit.
Dave is survived by his son, David Nelson, Jr. & wife Cindy; daughter, Sherry Coggins & husband Steve; grandchildren, Hayden Nelson, Matthew Perkins, Blake Nelson, Nicholas Perkins, Lauren Rowland, Kiley Rowland, and Jonah Rowland; four great-grandchildren; and best friend, Ed Chamberlain. Dave is preceded in death by his parents, Herman Dallas, Nelson & Hilda Virginia Nelson; and grandson, Taylor Nelson
He was known just as much for his big heart as for his bold Hawaiian shirts, which became his unofficial uniform. To honor his vibrant spirit, the family invites anyone attending his service to wear a Hawaiian shirt in his memory—because Dave believed life should be colorful, joyful, and lived to the fullest.
A graveside service with full military honors will take place on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at 12:30 PM at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project in Dave’s name at https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org/ , continuing his lifelong support for his fellow veterans.
Rest easy, Dave. Your laugh, your heart, and your Hawaiian shirts will live on in all of us.
