The family of Dorothy Granata Stockwell, with sadness and joy, announces her passing on January 11, 2024 after a brief illness. The sadness is for missing their sweet Mom, grandma and “GGma”, as she was affectionately known. The joy is for the reuniting with her high school sweetheart and husband of 67 years, Albert Stockwell, whom she has missed dearly since his passing on September 22, 2022.
Dorothy was born on January 20, 1933 into a large Italian family in Niagara Falls, New York. This is where she learned the value of strong family ties. She spoke often of her time as a young girl and the lessons she learned as she became a strong independent woman. She and Al lived on Grand Island, New York before moving to Midland, Michigan and later to Macon, Georgia. They eventually settled in Kennesaw, Georgia where she spent the last 45 years of her life. Dorothy worked as a lab tech for Union Carbide in Niagara Falls and then with Dow Corning in Midland, and upon moving to Macon she switched careers and became a claims examiner for the Georgia Department of Labor. She retired from the Georgia Department of Labor in 1999.
Dorothy and Albert enjoyed gardening and traveling. A combination of cruises and land trips took them all over the world. Dorothy was exceptionally skilled with her hands and had a wonderful eye for beauty. She enjoyed sewing and creating silk floral arrangements. She started her own craft business “Dorothy’s Touch” that had her participating in craft shows around the state. Her greatest joy came from the work she did for their church. She served as a Eucharistic Minister, was a wedding coordinator for 5 years and was very actively involved in many of the decoration and hospitality functions of the church as well as one of the first Bell Choir members. She was instrumental in starting the annual Harvest Festival Craft Show at St. Catherines by opening her home to the any Ladies’ Guild members who wanted to come and learn a craft or use their skills to help produce goods to be sold at their annual fund raiser. It brought her great joy to see others enjoy the fruits of her labors. She felt that she was accomplishing something in her life by sharing her skills with others. Her Catholic faith was of the highest importance and her time and talent was her way of giving back.
Dorothy is survived by her two daughters: Dr. Karyn L. Stockwell of Kennesaw, Ga and Lori A. Wright (Glynn) of Juliette, GA. She also leaves behind 2 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren whom she loved very much. Granddaughter Lindsey Evans (Cliff) and children Sophie, Sarah and Scarlet. Grandson David Wright (Abi) and children Poppy and Sutton. She is also survived by two sisters and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 1pm at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Kennesaw, GA followed by a reception in the church hall. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Mostly Mutts Rescue https://mostlymutts.org or Macular Degeneration Research shttps://macular.org/
