Duncan was born in Queens, New York, on October 30, 1942, to Duncan Lee and Mary Francis (Mazie) Fisher. He spent his early years in Sunnyside and Bayside before moving to Greenlawn, New York, in 1961. He graduated from Harborfields High School in 1960.
Duncan began his career in law enforcement as a New York City Transit Police Officer while pursuing his education. In 1969, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from C.W. Post University and transferred to the Suffolk County Police Department. He proudly served as a sergeant and was the former editor of The Shield 370. In 1980, he retired with a three-quarter disability pension.
During his time as editor of The Shield, Duncan discovered a passion for photography, which grew into a successful business after his retirement. He went on to photograph politicians and corporations, turning his creative talent into a rewarding second career. In 1992, Duncan moved with his family to the Brookstone community in Acworth, Georgia, where he later kept busy working as a courier.
On April 1, 1962, Duncan met Patricia Louis Joyce, the love of his life. They married on August 15, 1964, beginning a beautiful partnership that lasted until Patricia’s passing on January 29, 2015. Together, they enjoyed traveling and creating memories throughout their years together. They were blessed to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary surrounded by their family before Patricia’s passing. Their enduring love was a defining part of Duncan’s life.
Duncan’s legacy of wisdom, determination, and devotion will live on through his family. He is survived by his three children: daughter Tracy Benedict and her husband, Jim; son Duncan L. Fisher II and his wife, Lana; and son Robert Fisher and his wife, Stacey. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Jordan Benedict, Kasen Fisher, James Benedict, Jenna Benedict, Haven Fisher, Aubrey Fisher, and Ethan Fisher, who will carry his memory forward. He is also survived by his sister, Maureen Vachris, her husband, Alfred, and their children, Alana, Alfred and Andrew who remain an important part of his family and his lasting legacy.
Duncan is now reunited in heaven with his beloved wife, Patricia, and his parents, Duncan Lee and Mary Francis Fisher.
Duncan had a practical outlook on life and a sharp sense of humor. He took great pride in what he liked to call beating the “system” through his pension and Social Security. Combined with his investments and a modest lifestyle, his careful planning allowed him to build a legacy that will benefit generations of his family. It was a final lesson in his resourcefulness, independence, and belief in providing for those he loved.
Duncan will be remembered for his service, his entrepreneurial spirit, his love of travel and photography, and, above all, his devotion to his family. His life was a testament to hard work, perseverance, and the lasting power of love. Though he will be deeply missed, the wisdom he shared, the memories he created, and the legacy he leaves behind will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Life with family will be held at Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, on November 24, 2026 at 11:30am. Duncan will be laid to rest with his wife at Winkenhofer Pineridge Memorial Park, Kennesaw, GA.
