Farewell to a true southern gentleman. Edward Flynn was born in Union, South Carolina in 1929 to Edith Smith Flynn and Phillip Dunne Flynn. Growing up during the depression with his parents and 4 siblings (Edith Butler, Frances Mims, Phillip Flynn and Jack Flynn) taught Edward the importance of a strong work ethic, family, and having God in his life. He was an exceptional student and graduated Valedictorian from high school, and received an appointment to The United States Naval Academy in Annapolis where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, while also lettering on the Naval Academy varsity track team. Later he obtained a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Upon graduation, Edward served his country for 16 years in the Air Force as a bomber pilot during the Korean War, being stationed in Okinawa. After his military service, he was hired by Pratt and Whitney Aircraft of United Technologies, where he worked as an engineer until he retired.
Edward Flynn married Sherrie Grow Flynn on 12/18/56 and they remained happily married until his death on May 21, 2019, sixty-three years later. They had 3 children, Edward Flynn III, Paul Flynn and Ann Jacobs-Ogle, all living in Georgia. During his working years, Edward, Sherrie and their children were relocated 6 times, moving between Florida, California, Ohio, each time for his job with Pratt & Whitney. Edward was deeply spiritual and an active member of the 1st United Methodist Church of Kennesaw until his death. He showed God's love to his family on a daily basis, and was never too busy to throw a ball with his sons or grandson (Cooper Jacobs), or teach any of his children and grandchildren how to ride a bicycle or drive a car. Particularly amusing was watching this former military man prove his adaptability by learning to play with Barbie dolls and having tea parties with all of his 5 granddaughters (Candace Flynn, Corinne Flynn, Colleen Barraza, Shawna Jacobs and Sara Paige Flynn), all of whom still adore him for doing so. He was a quiet and reserved man with an overly big heart and sense of humor, who was always kind and patient with everyone. But mostly he will be remembered as loving and devoted father, grandfather, son, and husband, who is sorely missed by his family in Kennesaw and Sandy Springs, Georgia.
