Erma Deloris Taylor Maxwell passed away peacefully on April 28, 2019, at Daybreak Village Assisted Living in Kennesaw, Georgia. She was a resident of Acworth, Georgia for 39 years. Mrs. Maxwell was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Lee Taylor and Onie Mae Butler Taylor, her husband of 62 years, James Maxwell, a son, Mark Allen Maxwell, and siblings Harold Taylor, Woodrow Taylor, Ann Watson, Jack Taylor, Allie Branan, and Mavis Johnson. She is survived by her children, James Maxwell (Cynthia), Kenneth Maxwell, Donald Maxwell (Cathy), Gina Maxwell, and Christy Smith (Tim), as well as by brothers Tommy Taylor and Travis Taylor.
Deloris was born on August 22, 1935, in Emerson, Arkansas, with the family later moving to Spring Hill, Louisiana. Deloris was industrious at an early age, once picking cotton to earn money for a bicycle, in addition to her usual household and farm chores. She moved to Memphis, Tennessee, at the urging of her sisters Ann and Allie, helping Allie with her 2 girls and loving it. She graduated from Humes-Fogg High School in Memphis.
She and Jim were married in Hernando, Mississippi, on February 26, 1955. Deloris was probably the best kind of military wife an Airman could want. When Jim was on an overseas assignment, he knew Deloris was capable of handling their large family until his return. When faced with the frequent relocations that military families endure, her true nature really showed through. Jim once stated that he would leave for the first day of his new post with the house filled with boxes and in disarray, only to return that evening with everything put away and dinner on the table.
She was a true matriarch, beloved by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved baking and getting ready for holidays and gathering her large family around her. She was a loving grandmother to Kelly, Chris, Jamie, Jeremy, Amy, Kate, Jessica, Ashley, Robbie, and Cara Ann, as well as 14 great-grandchildren.
She was a server (and a darn good one) at Shoney’s for 30 years, where she was affectionately known as “Miss D”. She attended Bascom United Methodist Church.
