July 19, 1930 – January 24, 2020
Frank J. Arthen, age 89, of Kennesaw, GA, died Friday, January 24, 2020. A traditional Requiem Mass will be said at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Mableton, GA, on Wednesday, January 29 at 2:00 followed by burial at Pine Ridge Memorial Park in Kennesaw. Mr. Arthen was preceded in death by his dear wife, Luise C. Arthen, and loving son, Paul Gregory Arthen. An undergraduate of Manhattan College, Frank went on to receive his Master’s degree in Chemistry from Rutgers University. His education was interrupted by Frank’s induction and service in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Following Frank’s graduation from Manhattan, he began a long and highly successful research career, beginning with Eastman Kodak in Rochester, NY, and subsequently for American Cyanamid in Bound Brook, NJ. Among his proudest achievements was serving in the Chemical Light Division of Cyanamid in which Frank and his colleagues developed the light stick. Frank was also responsible for several additional patents during his tenure as a research chemist. He had a life-long passion for photography and wood-work, and established his own camera repair business. Frank was a devout Catholic and a long-standing parishioner of Our Lady of Mercy (South Bound Brook, NJ), St. Ann’s (Hampton, NJ) and Sacred Heart (Brevard, NC). In addition to his personal and professional occupations, Frank above all ensured a loving home for his eight children; his 64-year marriage to Luise was a living testimony to their deep mutual love and devotion. He took great joy in being a grandfather, and he was most recently blessed with the gift of two great granddaughters. Mr. Arthen is survived by his children – Joseph Arthen (Simone), David Arthen (Rebecca), Christopher Arthen (Odette), Mary Stolz (Mike) Vincent Arthen, Claire Hornick (Brad), and Peter Arthen (Aoy) - and fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Friends are cordially invited to visit with the family on Tuesday, January 28 at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home in Kennesaw from 6:00pm to 8:30pm.
