George was born in 1947 in Glendale, California, where he grew up alongside his brother, Mike Johnston, and sister, Ellen Bivens. He earned a master’s degree from the University of La Verne and devoted his professional life to public service. George worked as a probation officer and rose into leadership roles with both Los Angeles County and Inyo County, spending decades supporting and advocating for young people through youth probation and coaching. Throughout his career and life, he promoted fairness, honesty, and respect.
George was actively involved in the Lions Club and several four-wheel-drive clubs. He loved fishing, camping, reading, and especially watching his daughter and grandchildren play sports. An avid fan of many sports, he had a particular fondness for softball. George also had a deep love of history—he enjoyed visiting museums and made it a personal mission to read every historical marker he encountered.
Traveling with his beloved wife, Jacque, was one of George’s great joys. Together, they explored the country. George loved going on four-wheeling adventures with his friends visiting old ghost towns. He was known for his love of meaningful quotes, which he frequently shared with family as sources of inspiration.
Above all else, George prioritized his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a loyal friend whose presence and guidance touched many lives.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Marjorie Johnston. He is survived by his loving wife, Jacque Johnston; his daughter, Jamie Holt; her husband, Peter; and their children, Dylan and Sydney. He is also survived by his brother, sister, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank everyone for the care, kindness, and compassion shown during this difficult time. In lieu of a memorial service, family and friends are invited to send a letter to Jacque sharing their favorite memory of George, so she may create a memory book in his honor.
