October 15, 1936 – April 21, 2014
George Tom Poulos passed away Monday after a brief hospitalization. He was a special person that touched many lives with his unconditional love, unending lessons, and positive outlook on life.
George was born in Dearborn, Michigan as the first son born in the US of Greek immigrants and was proud of his heritage. He was a recognized state swimmer still holding a school record at Dearbon Fordson High School. His love of the water carried through to his children where many a family activity took place around the pool, lake or on a cruise ship.
His other passion was traveling where he explored almost every continent and country in the world always having 2 or 3 trips in the future queue. His wanderlust was a passion shared with the family and encouraged them to join whenever possible. He was happiest sharing stories of the day’s exploration while enjoying a nice dinner en route to yet another port. As an avid University of Michigan fan, he could be seen most game days in his blue and maize clothing.
George spent over 50 years working in the lumber industry where he rose from unloading boxcars to owning his own successful business. Not only revered by family he equally loved being a leader leaving a lasting positive impression on all who worked with him and for him.
His loving wife, Sue, of 55 years, survives him; He is also survived by five devoted children Gary Poulos (Mary) of Canton, GA, Greg Poulos of Atlanta, GA, Diane Hantz of Woodstock, GA, Allen Poulos (Amy) of Canton, GA and Sharon Poulos of Marietta, GA. He has seven grand children – Dr. Jennifer Poulos, Lauren Hantz, Amanda Poulos, Michael Poulos, Taylor Poulos, Jack Poulos and Paige Poulos. He is preceded in death by his parents (Peter and Stella) and siblings Joyce Bitner, Chris Poulos, and Mary Poulos and is survived by his brother Steve Poulos.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Thursday April 24, 2014 from 4 – 9 pm at Winkerhofer Pine-Ridge Funeral Home (2950 Cobb Parkway, Kennesaw, GA) and a funeral service on Friday April 25, 2014 at 11:00am at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church (3431 Trickum Road, Marietta, GA). Graveside burial to follow at Kennesaw Memorial Garden (1306 Whitlock Avenue, Marietta, GA). Open reception to follow interment.
