Gene Highfield, age 79, of Marietta passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 9, 2016.

A husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Mr. Highfield loved every member of his family, especially his wife, of 59 years, Martha. Gene and Martha had a beautiful connection with each other and even to the end, Gene would ask "where is she," when Martha would take just a moment to leave the room.

Mr. Highfield had owned and operated a service station - Acworth Amaco for 15 years. He also worked at both wholesale and retail auto sales including Tidwell Motors for 15 years and Hardy Ford before retiring.

He was a very outgoing person and was the kind of person who would never meet a stranger. He was very generous and loving and would give the shirt off of his back if it would help someone.

He was a member of Woodstock First Baptist Church, Acworth Masonic Lodge No. 176 F&AM, the American Legion, and had served as a Shriner.

The family will receive friends Sunday, June 12, 2016 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm and again on Monday, June 13, 2016 from 10:30 am - 11:30 am at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home in Kennesaw. Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 am Monday in the funeral home's chapel with Pastor Mike Woods and Rev. Tom Williams officiating. Interment will follow at the Georgia National Cemetery at 2:00 pm (please plan on arriving at the Georgia National Cemetery by 1:30 pm).

Gene Highfield is survived by his wife of 59 years, Martha Williams Highfield; son, Mark Highfield and his wife, Lucia, of Acworth; daughter, Susan Highfield Pierce and her husband, Robert, of Dallas; brother, Larry Highfield of Macon; sisters, Kathy Highfield of Cartersville and Sue Highfield Knox of Cartersville; sister-in-law, Diane Highfield of Acworth; 6 grandsons, Alex Highfield, Aaron Highfield, Hunter Highfield, Joseph Highfield, Nicholas Taylor, and Ashton Taylor; 3 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Anne Rose Highfield, Baron Alexander Highfield, and Olivia Wren Highfield; many nieces and nephews, cousins throughout Georgia, and also his many "adopted children" who looked to him as a dad.

Martha. So sorry for your loss. Lost touch with Gene in the last few years but he has always been most highly regarded by me ... a pleasure to be around, with me as a customer, and with him as a patient. No doubt Gene was a very special person, with a bubbling, overflowing personality. ... always so enjoyable to see ... no doubt he enhanced many lives!! Loved the guy for sure! Thanks be to God for this man! Jim Goodlet, MD

No doubt Gene has already heard the welcome words, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord."

Our deepest condolences to Mark, Susan, Martha and all of the grandchildren. Remember, if you know where he is and who he is with, you haven't really lost him at all.

Dear Martha, Mark and Susan, I am so sorry. Like daddy he is no longer suffering. I have such fond memories of Gene from the Daytona days when Mark and I were kids. When I hear the name Gene Highfield that big smile always comes to mind. He was a fine man that I was blessed to have known.
I know what a hard time this is. My prayers will be with you all!

Although many years have passed since last talking to Gene, I remember him like it was yesterday. He always left you feeling better about yourself. Fine example of a husband, friend and co-worker. Mark and Susan, you are in our prayers.
