Joan was born on November 19, 1937 in Northern New Jersey, where she spent her childhood and teenage years. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Rosemont College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She went on to teach and then work at American Cyanamid, where she met Elliott, her beloved husband of over 50 years.
Her primary role after marrying Elliott in 1963 was to manage the Hebert family household, where she raised her 3 children and volunteered for every activity under the sun in Franklin Lakes to support her kids. Joan and Elliott retired to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida in 1994, and later moved to Kennesaw, Georgia to be near their daughter, Martine and her family.
Joan was a shining example of God’s love, and she was as thoughtful and selfless a person as we have known. She was devoted to her family, had such a kind and gentle way about her, and she loved to laugh. Joan’s true joy was her family time each year on Topsail Island, and many holiday trips to Richmond, Virginia.
Joan was an amazing wife to Elliott for their 51 years together. She was a devout Catholic throughout her life, and she found a new passion in her recent years volunteering at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store in Kennesaw. She met many amazing people while working there, and created friendships she spoke about with pure joy.
Joan is survived by her son, Kevin (Kristen) of Midlothian, Virginia, her daughter Martine Radcliffe (Chris) of Marietta, and her son Grady (Sarah) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. She is also survived by seven loving grandchildren - Logan, Chase, Macy, Jack, Del, Anna, and Bartley who affectionately call her “Mummer”. Her brother, Barry Hurtz (Betty) lives in Jacksonville, Florida, and her sister, Kathy Shay (Dennis) lives in Austin, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the St. Vincent de Paul Society located at 2722 Summers Street, Kennesaw, Georgia 30144
A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, June 14th at 11:00am at the Catholic Church of St. Ann on Roswell Road in Marietta. A private, family interment will take place at Georgia National Cemetery following the service.
