John graduated from Auburn University, formerly known as Alabama Polytechnic Institute, with a degree in Business Administration. While in school, he participated in the ROTC program and, upon graduation, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.
John and Dora were married in 1953 and spent the next seventy years together. As a military family, they traveled the world throughout John’s career with their two children, Lynn and John.
During his Air Force career, John worked in supply and management. After completing 20 years of service, he began a second career with Army Civil Service, managing commissaries in Germany and North Carolina.
Following his final retirement, John and Dora settled in Kennesaw, Georgia. John volunteered for many years at the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History and published a book titled The Engine Thief and the Medal of Honor. Throughout his adult life, he was an active member of the Baptist Church. He regularly attended Kennesaw First Baptist Church and enjoyed weekly Sunday school until his passing.
John had a deep love for genealogy and traced both his and Dora’s families back many generations. He was a collector of stamps, coins, and art. He enjoyed playing cribbage, indulging in sweet snacks, and sharing his sense of humor. He was best known for his kindness.
John is survived by his son, John Grimm; his grandchildren, Max Grimm and Rick Grimm; his brother, Charles Grimm; and, most importantly, his beloved cat, Misty Grimm.
A celebration of John’s life will be held at Winkenhofer Funeral Home on January 13 at 7:30 p.m. The family will receive friends beginning at 7:00 p.m.
