Dr. John Woods Stewart II of Kennesaw, GA died unexpectedly on February 25, 2018 at the age of 75.
John is survived by his children Jennifer (Brian) Lawrence of Kennesaw and John (Ramon) Stewart III of San Francisco, the mother of his children Jean Stewart, his grandchildren Molly and Stewart Lawrence, and his siblings Patsy Steed, Peggy McConnell, Richard Stewart and Ken Stewart. He is predeceased by his father Richard Stewart and his mother Virginia Stewart (nee McCorkle).
John was born in Henderson, TN on April 5, 1942. He received Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Tennessee system. He participated in cooperative eduction with DuPont in the 1960s, became a full-time DuPont employee in the late 1960s, and remained there until his retirement in 2000. He continued to contribute to DuPont in a consulting role in the US and Mexico for several more years.
John was an avid reader of historical non-fiction and he enjoyed all things cultural and intellectual. He loved to travel and enjoyed good food and drink. He was a life-long sports fan. As a boy he was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, later in life he adopted the Atlanta Braves, and he was the number one fan of his daughter’s tennis teams and grandson’s little league teams. In recent years, he and his brothers started a tradition of attending baseball spring training, first in Florida and then in Arizona. In his later years he became a genealogical scholar and self-published his family’s history in the book “Come On, I Say, Come On!” Above all things he loved his family and his friends. He was selfless and generous with everyone, was both a good listener and talker, and had a clever but corny sense of humor. He placed a great value on education and had a positive influence on the lives of multiple generations of young people.
A visitation is scheduled for Thursday March 1 at 1:00pm followed by a Celebration of Life at 2:30pm at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home (2950 North Cobb Parkway NW, Kennesaw, GA). Family and friends are invited to gather at the Lawrence home after the celebration. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a children’s education or homelessness service charity.
