Juana LaCrix (Please note: The spelling of LaCrix reflects the name as it appears on her legal documentation) was born on December 29, 1928, in Maracaibo, Venezuela. She was the third of seven children born to Edith Miller LaCroix and Julian LaCroix.
At the age of five, Juana was sent to Trinidad to live with her beloved grandparents, Alberta and Alfred Miller. At sixteen, she married Donald Cuffy, and together they welcomed two children, Melina Cuffy Daly and Bartholomew Cuffy.
At the age of thirty-one, Juana met Ruben Skerette, and together they welcomed two daughters, Cheryl Ann LaCroix and Cathy Ann LaCroix.
In 1966, at the age of thirty-eight, Juana migrated to the United States, where she built an exemplary life for herself and her family as a single parent. She worked for Union 32BJ for more than twenty years and also dedicated herself to working in home care, where she cared for and supported the elderly.
Juana was deeply passionate about her Catholic faith and had a strong devotion to Jesus, especially to His Mother, Mary. Her faith was an important part of who she was and guided the way she lived her life. She was an active member of the St. Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary and the Charismatic Prayer Groups and Rosary Groups at Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Philip Benizi, Corpus Christi and Transfiguration - Catholic Churches. Praying the Rosary and meditating on the life of Jesus was her favorite past time. It’s appropriate and comforting to know Juana went home on the Feast Day of the Assumption of Mary and at 12Noon – the Angelus Hour.
Juana was an exceptional cook and baker who found great joy in feeding others, especially for the homeless on Wednesdays at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. No one ever left her home hungry. She loved preparing curry dishes and was especially known for making roti at any time of day or night. Her kitchen was a place of warmth, love, laughter, and togetherness.
Juana was the matriarch of our family. Throughout her many years of life, she taught us the importance of patience, kindness, love, generosity, faith, and perseverance. She did her best to instill these virtues in each of us.
Juana showed us how to work hard, enjoy life, love deeply, care for others, and, above all, put God first. Her life was a beautiful example of strength, devotion, and unconditional love.
Juana was preceded in death by her parents, spouse, 6 siblings and 2 children. Juana leaves behind one sister, two daughters, ten grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and three great-greatgrandchildren, along with countless family members and friends whose lives she touched.
Her legacy is in each and every one of us. We carry her love, her lessons, her faith, her laughter, and her memories in our hearts.
A person who is loved is never truly forgotten, and Juana was loved very much. May her beautiful soul rest in eternal peace.
