On the 17th of April in 1924, Matrid Leicester Mahon was born in Foul Bay, St. Philip, Barbados to the parents of the late Mazie and Brandford Brathwaite. She received her education at St. Martin's School in St. Philip, and later became a seamstress and managed the household.
In December of 1946, Matrid married her beloved husband the late Dudley D'Albert Mahon. Their loving and blessed union lasted 61 years until Dudley's passing in June 2008. Matrid was a devoted, loving, and caring mother to her children, Keith, Maida, Cheryl and the late Jon.
In the late 1940s, Matrid made her choice to serve the Lord. Throughout the years of her life, she enjoyed fellowship with others, attending meetings, gospel meetings, and conventions. Her faithfulness, love, and devotion to God were clearly portrayed in her walk of life. She was always found reading her Bible and singing hymns. She was always sharing the word of God and how much it meant to her with others.
Matrid and her husband migrated to the United States in 1986. She opened a daycare and for many years took care of children. She also took great care of her grandchildren and great grandchildren through the years. To her grandchildren, she was known as Granny and some called her Granertz. She was described as very loving, caring, kind, God-fearing, wise, a woman of great integrity. She was always willing to give and share whatever she had. Granny loved to cook. Every time you visited Granny’s home, you would always be served with her tasty and mouth watering home cooked foods such as cou cou and fish, fish cakes, bakes, fritters and zucchini bread just to mention a few.
After the passing of Matrid’s husband, she moved to Virginia with her daughter Cheryl. In November 2010, Matrid relocated to Georgia and lived with her son Jon and his family and then later returned to live with her daughter Cheryl. In the latter years of her life, she was lovingly cared for by her grandson John, his wife Katty, family, and caregivers until she was called home to rest.
