Montez Motes, 85, of Marietta, lost her battle with cancer early Sunday morning. Originally from Blackshear, Mrs. Motes moved to Atlanta in 1967. She worked in the jewelry business in Waycross, then Atlanta, before owning a series of holiday and gift stores with her husband.
Whether perfecting a seven-minute frosting for a coconut cake or sharing her signature pound cake, she will always be remembered for her delicious cakes and iconic Southern meals. She was blessed to have many special friends from Eastwood Baptist Church; wonderful neighbors in the East Park community; and her beloved dog, Einstein, who was her joy and constant companion. Mrs. Motes prided herself on being a good neighbor, and her many friends and family were by her side throughout her illness.
Predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Edward, she is survived by daughter Patricia Motes Boren and her husband, Thomas, and her son, Michael Motes, and his wife, Theresa. Mrs. Motes has three grandchildren, Katie and Carter Motes, and Lisa Boren Sivy, as well as two great-grandsons, Lucas and Christopher Sivy.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 21 at 11:00a.m., at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home, with a visitation on Tuesday evening, from 5:00 – 8:00p.m. Mrs. Motes is to be buried with her late husband in Alma, GA later in the week. Mrs. Motes was a child of God, and her family takes comfort in knowing she is now in a better place and no longer suffering.
