Shirley Lee Barton

Shirley L. Barton, died peacefully surrounded by family on January 16, 2024 at Northside Cherokee Hospital in Canton, GA. She was born January 15, 1937 in Ponchatoula, LA, the third child of seven of James Luther and Ethel (Matthews) Bowman.

Shirley graduated from Ponchatoula High School, class of 1955. Following graduation, she worked in Baton Rouge at Morning Treat Coffee Company for several years. In 1957 she married the love of her life, Thevis O. Barton. They moved around the country with his job until 1965 when they settled in Huntsville, AL. In 1980 they relocated to Marietta, GA where they lived until 2020. Shirley worked for Upton’s department store for a number of years where she often was recognized for her excellent customer service. But the title she cherished most was Grandma to her 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Shirley most recently was a resident of Canton, GA.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Thevis O. Barton, James Luther Bowman (father), Ethel Matthews Bowman (mother), Lula Mae McDonald (sister), Merlin Bowman (brother), James Luther Bowman, Jr. (brother).

Shirley is survived by daughter Darlene Marshall (spouse, Don); sons Mark Barton (spouse, Jennifer) and Paul Barton (spouse, Rachel); grandchildren Heather (spouse, Ryan), Heath, John, Kelsey, and Sarah; great grandchildren Isaac, Reagan, Tyler, John, Morgan, and Jase; sisters Patsy Bryant, Cherrie Quave (spouse, Charlie), brother Gary Bowman and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A celebration of life for Shirley will be held Saturday, March 16, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Oak Knoll Country Club, 45246 Country Club Rd, Hammond, LA 70401.
