She was born on December 27, 1952, in Newark, New Jersey, to her parents, Mary and Gil Fantau. Her brothers and sister—Phillip, Lisa, David, and Michael—remember both her caring heart and her formidable childhood.
After attending Lynchburg College in Virginia, Susan began her 12 year career as a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines. She cherished the opportunity to meet new people and see the world—truly a dream fulfilled. Not long after, she met the love of her life, Eli Velasquez, they married on November 4, 1983.They built their lives in Atlanta, Georgia, where they raised their family.
Following her time with Eastern Airlines, Susan co-founded Genesis Ministries, a faith-based drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, alongside her husband. For three decades, she played a pivotal role in restoring broken families and guiding individuals toward faith and renewal. She grew into a vibrant and passionate teacher, often joyfully competing with her husband for the microphone during Sunday services.
Susan was known for her generous spirit and her candid, unwavering honesty. She saw the good in people and believed deeply in second chances, forming countless meaningful relationships throughout her life.
When the war in Ukraine began, she opened her home to families seeking refuge, offering not just shelter but hope and a path forward. Her compassion knew no bounds, and her home became a place of new beginnings for many.
Each Wednesday morning, she devoted herself to serving the homeless at Shady Grove Baptist Church. Beyond providing meals, she mentored individuals and helped them find employment, determined to support their journey back to stability. She never gave up on anyone.
Above all, Susan loved her sons more than life itself. She was their fiercest supporter and constant source of encouragement.
She found joy in simple pleasures—a good cup of coffee, a great find on Facebook Marketplace, and afternoons spent watching Judge Judy, usually with another cup of coffee in hand.
Susan was the heart and soul of the Velasquez family, and her love, faith, and strength will live on in all who knew her.
