Tom was born in Syracuse, New York, and grew up sailing out of the Chautauqua Lake Yacht Club. As a boy, “Tommy” and his boat Make Way won a number of National Junior and Senior races, ultimately placing 9th in the 1952 “Snipe” class National Championship in Green Lake, Wisconsin. Later, as a young man, Tom owned and competitively raced the 40’ Dutch-built yawl Zuiderzee in the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit.
Tom served in the United States Navy after high school. He then went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science from Florida Southern College in 1961, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, and a Master of Science from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1969. Though Tom never lost his love of sailing and the open water, he spent his career in the skies, working in the aerospace industry as a contract engineer and procurement manager for Honeywell, Boeing, Westinghouse, Haliburton, and Bechtel. He retired in 2001 at the age of 66 having spent the last 19 years of his career with Lockheed Martin in Marietta helping to advance the C-130 Hercules and V-22 Osprey aircraft.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Irene, and by his boyhood sailing companion and brother, David. He is survived by his loving wife, Glynda, his children, Kristi, Tait, Darin and Brian, and by his eleven grandchildren and great grandson.
Tom was active in his Christian faith and is remembered by the many friends he made through Tres Dias of North Georgia, Must Ministries, his devoted bible study group and his men’s group.
Tom will be buried at a private ceremony with Naval honor guard at the National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. A memorial service will be held for his extended family and community of friends at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 7th, at Mount Paran North Church of God.
