
Virginia Marie Hughes, known to her friends as Ginny and to her family as Nan, died peacefully In Kennesaw Georgia on April 2, 2018 at the age of 92. Virginia is survived by her eight children, twenty grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond James Rowland of New Milford, New Jersey, and her second husband, Harold Joseph Hughes of Kennesaw, Georgia. Ginny was born on March 21, 1926 in Orange, New Jersey to Margaret Courter and Arthur Cleveland Roe. Upon graduating school, she worked for the Newark Evening News and taught dance at the Arthur Murray dance studio. After marrying her first husband, Raymond Rowland, she became mother to four children. She was widowed in 1960 and shortly thereafter met Harold Hughes, a widower himself and the father of two. They married, joining their families and adding two additional children. The family spent each school year in New Milford, New Jersey, and each summer at the beach in Lavallette. Upon retirement from United Jersey Bank, Ginny and her husband Harold spent many happy years in retirement at Spanish Lakes Fairways, Fort Pierce, Florida. Ginny (Nan) was a well-loved matriarch, an avid tennis player, a terrific dancer and a loyal Yankee fan. A devout Catholic, she volunteered through her church, St. Anastasia’s, delivering communion to the homebound and assisting the St. Vincent dePaul Catholic charities.
A memorial service will be held in Fort Pierce, Florida at a date in the near future.
