Betty Schaeffer
March 03,1935 - April 19,2017
Peacefully, with her husband by her side, Betty passed away at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Dick; sister Helen Neilson of Calgary; grandson Greg Harrison who had a special relationship with Betty, and granddaughter Gillian Dempsy; Betty also leaves behind close family members, Bill White (Bill McCann’s nephew), and Bill White’s children Matthew and Kate of whom she spoke very highly of. Betty was predeceased by her parents Alfred and Catrina Christensen; brother Allan; and her first husband Bill McCann.
Throughout the years, Betty was active and energetic in all areas of life. She was an active member of her church, Notre Dame du Portage and a long-time member of the C.W.L. Betty worked with the R.C.I.A. program for 12 years, was the first to be a lay reader, and also devoted countless hours working with the Parish Council to establish best practices. Betty also enjoyed curling and travelling until her health prevented her from continuing those activities.
Betty and Dick were an integral part of the committee who spearheaded the building of Grandview Villa in Kenora. They have resided in the Villa for the last eleven years and she was proud to be able to enjoy the fruits of her labor. Countless hours were spent and they worked tirelessly until the building was complete. The Villa residents are forever grateful for Betty’s passion and dedication to this project.
The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Workman, the hospital staff and everyone at CCAC, especially Sandra and Donna, for helping Betty to be able to remain at home until her final days.
A celebration of life will take place on Monday, May 8th, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Rudy Manaloto officiating followed by a reception in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kenora and Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation.
