December 2, 1947 - February 24, 2020
It is with heavy hearts that Evie O’Flaherty, Meredith Kennedy and Scott Henderson share the news of Brian’s death. He left this world quietly and at peace, in his home with loved ones.
He joins his mother and father, Jean and Jack Booty, maternal grandparents, Angus and Helen Cullaton, paternal grandparents Isa and Jack Booty, his father-in-law, Kevin F. O’Flaherty and many Aunts and Uncles.
Mourning his loss are his wife Evie, daughters Meredith (Scott), and Alison (Bob, Kaelan, Andrew), Mother-in-law, Peggy O’Flaherty, Evie’s family Mary-Margaret O’Flaherty, Dave Scrimger, Anne Johnson, Jim Johnson, Kathleen O’Flaherty, Ceci O’Flaherty, Michael O’Flaherty, Cheryl O’Flaherty, Kevin P. O’Flaherty and Leah O’Flaherty. Nieces and nephews, Colleen Scrimger (Cole Kaemingh, Braden, Chloe, Brianna), Tom Johnson (Sandra Ivetic, Mackenna, Malone), Michaela Scrimger (Pat Desjardins, Fia), Sarah Johnson, Heather Johnson, Meg Scrimger (Jamie McCann) Brian Johnson, Jamie Scrimger (Nathalie Quevillon-Dussault), Conor O’Flaherty, Sydney O’Flaherty (Brent Adams), Bridget O’Flaherty, Liam Stewart (Crystal Gleason) Kevin R. O’Flaherty, and Ted O’Flaherty.
Although an only child, Brian grew up surrounded by the love of a large extended family. His Chard, Cullaton and Pettit cousins were more like siblings as they spent the fifties living life playing street and ball hockey, fishing, golf and spending summers on Lake Erie with Isa and Jack. He had a deep love of all things hockey. This was especially evident through his life long passion for the Detroit Red Wings and Gordie Howe which was developed with his Dad at the Galt (Cambridge) Arena. Just prior to him leaving Galt for Kenora he tried out for the Galt Hornet’s hockey team.
Brian’s passion for fishing was what brought him to Kenora in 1970 and except for a few years it has been his home ever since. As a teacher Brian has touched the lives of thousands. He remained friends with many former colleagues and students to the end. His last teaching position was at Seven Generations Educational Institute where he remained dedicated to his students and took pride in his impact on their education until only weeks prior to his passing.
Thank you to all who supported Brian through a long and courageous battle with cancer, especially the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Chemotherapy Clinic. He so appreciated the good wishes, fantastic conversations and joy you brought to his life. He is at peace now with his parents and his God.
A ceremony and light snack reception will be held at Manidoo Baawaatig (Seven Generations Kenora Campus) on Friday March 6 at 6:00pm. Everyone is encouraged to wear Detroit Red Wing colours or a hockey jersey of your choice.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at Notre Dame du Portage at 11:00 am on Saturday March 7, 2020 with a light lunch to follow.
Brian’s ashes will be interred with his parents in Cambridge in the spring. More details will be shared as they are finalized.
Donations can be made to The Lake of the Woods Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.
