Ken is off to the same place as Catharine (Card) having missed her dearly since August 2001. They joined in 1955 and in so many ways defined each other.
Ken was born in Saskatchewan during the depression and drought, but moved for the second half of his youth to a new farm in Rainy River District with parents John and Ruby and brothers Jim (Miriam), Gilbert (Maizie), Gordon (Yvonne) and Paul (Faye).
He taught in rural schools near home before moving to Atikokan in 1952 where he taught, became Principal, and then Director all the while furthering his own education (BA from Western Ontario and M.Ed. from U of T). In 1972 he became Director of the Kenora Board of Education and led a process of amalgamating some schools and closing others to match school resources to the needs of our community.
In 1978, Ken stepped over to a teaching position so that he could run a tourist camp on Lake of the Woods. In 1984 he retired from both jobs and shortly after, he and Cath added a Saltspring Island winter home to the collection so that they could spend time at the coast and on the lake.
During all those years of working, building homes, and moving around, Ken and Cath raised Martha (Peter Barchyn, Tom and Emily, Gabriola Island BC), Andy (Hannah Hurrle, Abigail, Sam and Emma, Thunder Bay ON), Pete (Charmaine MacFarlane, David (Callum), John and Michael, Kenora ON), Tom (Micheline Blouin, Liam and Ryan, Winnipeg MB), and Will (Sherri Speak, Kyle, Nick, and Kaitlyn, Emo ON).
Ken cherished many great friends over the years and locations, but held a special place in his heart for Hugh and Lorna McTaggart and Emil and Barb Uhrynuk.
The family appreciates the care and concern of the good people of Grandview Villa and Pinecrest Home over the past few years.
If you really feel the need to buy flowers, do so to brighten your home. Contribute to a cause close to your heart if that makes you feel better. But why not just do what we will – next chance you get, rescue an old nail, straighten it, and re-use it being careful not to pound it all the way in.
