Poppa was born in Port Arthur, Ontario on December 22, 1926 to James and Mabel Simmons. In Thunder Bay he met the love of his life, Dorothy (Wilkinson) and they married on June 29, 1948. Soon after they had four beautiful children. Doug's employment brought them to Kenora in 1956 where the family planted their roots.
After losing his beloved in 1999, Doug found companionship and laughter again with his second wife, Mary (McNeely). The two went on grand adventures, enjoyed as much time as possible with their great grandchildren and truly enjoyed life. Doug leaves behind his daughter Lynda (grandchildren Cameron, Stan, Jonathan, Chris, Tricia & Leanne), son Grant (grandchildren Jessica & Lena Michelle), daughter Nancy, granddaughters Jennifer & Joanna and several great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his brother Murray, beloved wife Dorothy, partner in crime Mary, daughter Darlene and granddaughter Diana.
Doug worked for Ontario Hydro for 37 years, putting in transfer stations that to this day still bring light to those he loved. He was an active participant in the Eastern Star Kenora Chapter for many years and sat on several boards for the Knox United Church until he decided it was time to slow down.
Poppa loved wood working and often put his handy work to good use creating doll houses for his grandchildren, or fixing staircase spindles for the Knox church. When he wasn't in his wood shop he would be found outdoors, either practicing a putt on the lawn or enjoying the lake.
Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at the Knox United Church in Kenora, Ontario on Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at 11:00am with Rev. Meg Illman-White officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations would greatly be appreciated in Doug's memory to the Knox United Church or the Canadian Cancer Society.
What will be most remembered about you was your smile and laughter. Your smile made your eyes twinkle in the most mischievous way and your laughter was infectious! You will be sorely missed by many, and your memory will be treasured by all. We love you, Poppa.
