Fay and John Martell
John and Fay were married on October 17, 1952.
From the time they were married they worked as a team, with Mom being the brains of the operation and Dad providing the brawn. Dad had a number of careers throughout his life and early in their marriage provided the funds for Mom to go to university to become a registered nurse.
After Mom become a nurse she worked briefly in Nova Scotia in Glace Bay General Hospital and Dad ran a Fina Service Station. Dad’s Fina Service Station business was unsuccessful so he ended up working for various cold mines. By 1967 the family was ready for a change and they moved
to Northwestern Ontario, where dad became a supervisor at the gold mine in Renabie and Mother became the public health nurse for the community.
In 1970 Renabie mines closed and they moved to Kenora where Mom worked at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital and Dad worked for Kenora Motor Products and then his final career with Transcanada Pipelines.
Failing health caused both mom and dad to leave their careers early, however they still worked as the team to overcome their various disabilities.
When Mom passed, Dad had a hard time coping with the loss, which contributed to his failing health and he passed two months later.
They are survived by his sons Darrell (Gayle) and Todd (Charmaine), grandchildren Mitchell and Emma, John’s siblings Margaret, Marion, Lillian and Alice and Fay’s siblings, Mardy, Barshall and Mable.
